Handbook HVI

HANDBOOK “Guide to modern insulation testing”

The handbook is intended for electrical engineers and technicians to better acquaint them with the extensive problematic of high voltage insulation measurements.

The handbook contains the basics of insulation measurement and terms that are regulating this field.

The principles and purposes of different types of insulation testing (AC and DC voltage testing, Spot reading test, Time rise method, Dielectric discharge test, Step voltage test, Withstanding voltage test) are particularly described and their advantages and limitations are shown.

The typical problems which can occur during insulation measurements (e.g. surface leakages, influence of temperature and humidity, presence of noise signals, high capacitive loads, testing of fixed installed and grounded objects, etc.) and appropriate problem solving techniques are covered in the handbook.

The typical connections for insulation resistance testing of different objects are described and attended by clear illustrations. The complete testing procedure is shown, from the perception of the problem, the preparation and measurements itself, up to analysis and interpretation of final result.

International regulations and standards covering HV insulation resistance measurements are represented in the handbook.

METREL instruments for measuring of insulation resistance are shortly presented (MI 3200 TeraOhm 10 kV, MI 3201 TeraOhm 5 kV Plus, MI 3202 GigaOhm 5 kV).
