Versatile tools for servicing electric vehicles (EV)

Despite sharing more than 90 % of parts with vehicles with internal combustion engine, electric vehicles require specific approach to servicing the remaining 10 %, i.e. the electric motor(s) and batteries. Due to the nature of electricity and associated dangers, repair and maintenance should be undertaken only by qualified personnel with appropriate tools, such as our MD 9070 Insulation / Continuity Digital Multimeter and MD 9272 Leakage Clamp TRMS Meter with Power Functions.

The MD 9070 Insulation / Continuity Digital Multimeter is especially suitable for testing insulation (with voltages up to 1000 V DC) between any live and any accessible part in an electric vehicle. Same can be said for testing continuity of wires (with 200 mA test currents). It can also be used for measuring nominal voltage on vehicle’s battery packs, finding faults on PCBs and controlling signals on electric motors with VFD filtered frequency.
Equally useful is the MD 9272 Leakage Clamp TRMS Meter with Power Functions, particularly its leakage current measuring functionality (measuring range down to 0.1 µA). Leakage analysis is of great importance not just for finding leakage currents in car’s electrical wiring, but for monitoring the charging process between the charging station and vehicle. It can even be used for (limited) functional testing of electric motors and inventers (assuring that they cause no distortions).
