Troubleshooting in HV applications made easy


Measuring and testing on HV installations in power distribution and industrial environments is fraught with difficulties and dangers. There are technical challenges of generating high enough currents and voltages for reliable and accurate testing, without sacrificing the portability of the testing equipment, and ensuring proper ruggedness for operation in high voltage (HV) conditions.

Proper overvoltage category is also of great concern, as it is inextricably linked with the safety of both the testing equipment and the operator. Even more, the safety requirements should likewise cover all supported/associated accessories, since they are often the weak link in the testing chain, endangering the tested object, the equipment and ultimately the operator.

Specific and lofty requirements that could scarcely be fulfilled by any technological solution on the market. Well, it was until recently, when we introduced the MI 3143 Euro Z 440 V and MI 3144 Euro Z 800 V. Rugged, accurate and reliable instruments for measuring the effectiveness of trip-out protective measures of transformers and other HV equipment in industrial and other demanding environments, rife with electromagnetic interference (EMI).

They are similar in many aspects, but with marked difference in the number of supported tests and measurements. The MI 3144 Euro Z 800 V is the premiere products with full functionality, while the MI 3143 Euro Z 440 V is the streamlined version, with fewer functions and aimed at users with less stringent and less comprehensive testing and measuring requirements. Still, both can be used in conjunction with electrical safety testers, such as the MI 3155 EurotestXD, MI 3152 EurotestXC, MI 3152H EurotestXC 2.5 kV and MI 3325 MultiServicerXD, or in standalone mode, as instruments. In this mode of operation, they are remotely controlled with the A 1522 aMESM Android app-installed mobile device.
The MI 3144 Euro Z 800 V, being the more able of the two, distinguishes itself from its counterpart in the cooling radiator on the front panel, since it can operate at higher voltages and working temperatures. It also supports a wider range of testing and measuring functions:
  • High precision 4-wire 300 A Z Line and Z Loop impedance measurements.
  • High range 800 V measurements on 16 ... 420 Hz AC networks.
  • High range 440 V measurements on 16 ... 420 Hz AC networks.
  • DC source & line resistance 3 ... 260 V DC measurements.
  • High current dR 300 A 4-wire partial voltage drop measurements.
  • High current dR 300 A 4-wire current’s path resistance measurements.
  • Support for ELR type AC, A and B testing/measuring.
  • Earth leakage relay (ELR) trip-out testing time and current measurements.
  • ELR current injection testing.
  • Ground fault analysis with contact, touch and step voltage.
  • Floating voltmeter for partial contact results.
  • One-clamp high current ground integrity method with clamps (flex & iron).
The MI 3143 Euro Z 440 V supports fewer functions. Most notably it does not support any measuring or testing functions on DC networks and can’t test the reliability of ELRs:
  • High precision 4-wire 300 A Z Line and Z Loop impedance measurements.
  • High range 440 V measurements on 16 ... 420 Hz AC networks.
  • High current dR 300 A 4-wire partial voltage drop measurements.
  • Ground fault analysis with contact, touch and step voltage.
  • Floating voltmeter for partial contact results.
Their versatility is further enhanced by a wide array of complementary accessories, including those already included in both Standard and Euro sets. Worth presenting is the A 1658 Jumbo case for MI 3144. It can not only carry all the accessories included in the MI 3144 EU set (the largest number of accessories of the two instruments and one of the largest number of accessories in a set of any of our instruments), but is rugged enough to offer complete protection of its content (thanks to foam inserts) and equipped with wheels for easier transport.
