Comprehensive testing of EV charging stations

Since their advent more than century ago, when they were more advanced than those with internal combustion engine, electric vehicles are finally coming into the mainstream with electric cars leading the way. They have many obvious advantages, especially from an ecological standpoint, but their introduction and growing numbers have brought an array of economic and technological challenges. One of those is ensuring comprehensive electrical safety of not just vehicles themselves, but also charging stations and associated equipment.

There are many technical solutions for that on the markets, but none like we have developed here at Metrel. For starters, we have developed testing and measuring tools, which take into account the transient nature of electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) testing, at the intersection of electrical installation safety testing and machine and PAT testing. The best example of such a tool is the A 1632 eMobility Analyser.
It enables the user both electrical safety and functional testing of EVSE, i.e. checking if the charging station/equipment can actually charge a vehicle and do so in a proper (not only safe) and efficient manner. An added feature is the diagnostic functionality of communication monitoring between the charging station and (simulated) electric vehicle for a more comprehensive analysis of any potential issues. Supported (both safety and functional testing/analysis) are charging stations with type 1 and type 2 charging connectors and mode 2 and mode 3 charging cables.
The A 1632 eMobility Analyser also supports functional testing of EVSE. This is of special importance since the EVSE could be electrically safe, but otherwise completely unusable. As a part of this, the instrument can simulate an electric vehicle (setting CP and PP states) and monitor signals between the charging station or cable and simulated electric vehicle. As for compatibility, it is can work in conjunction with MI 3155 EurotestXD, MI 3152 EurotestXC, MI 3152H EurotestXC 2.5kV and MI 3325 MultiServicerXD. It is also fully compatible with the Metrel ES Manager (MESM) software, which can be used for creation of station and cable-based professional reports.
Besides the A 1632 eMobility Analyser we also offer a more competitive and application-specific product the A 1532 EVSE adapter. It offers electrical safety and functional testing of charging stations with only type 2 charging connectors and doesn’t support testing of EV charging cables and similar equipment. As such it is intended for safety engineers with less comprehensive requirements or ones that concern themselves with safety and functional testing of only a specific type of charging stations. But, similarly like its more able cousin, it operates in conjunction with MI 3155 EurotestXD, MI 3152 EurotestXC and MI 3152H EurotestXC 2.5kV and is compatible with MESM software (report creation).
