Quality electrical insulation is paramount in virtually any electrical system and ensures not only reliable operation, but mitigates dangers of overvoltage to both electrical equipment and personnel. External physical and chemical factors slowly degrade the insulation material, which may fail at most inopportune time.
Changes in dielectric properties of insulation materials that may lead to failure are best detected through high voltage testing with aptly named high voltage insulation testers, megohmmeters, or meggers as they are also commonly referred to as. Metrel offers a range of portable high voltage insulation testers suitable for testing in the 2.5 kV to 10 kV range using standard methods.
